heart to heart

my intent every morning, with coffee of course, is to have a heart to heart with myself. each day i read a page from the book of awakening and treat myself by wearing my reading glasses. my cat monkey almost always attends the ritual. a marvel it is, to take that time.
so this is the time i need to make valentines for hearts, not minds, and this is the first one. it is available on my website. sorry i have to make a sales pitch. you see i still love it, so it is a very good catch.
today the song in my head is nothing could be finer than to be in carolina , do you know that one? it is quite odd because usually the song in my head is- oh them golden slippers. a friend of mine always sings- if i only had a brain, if i were her, i would come up with a new song.
i did feel a song rise when i took time to make tofu scramble this morning. i would have it at juna's cafe which is now manndible cafe. oh dear i must make another sales pitch to see art, i just changed the show up at manndible, it is a wonderful place to be in winter, really.
what a wonderful thing to just write to world, thank-you. yes, here in upstate ny, it makes it easier than going outside sometimes. so i need to end this with more heart to heart than brain waves. i know ! i will end it with a quote by anais nin :

just got back from a wonderland, down south, in georgia. my parents and sister reside there and now my son also. we went out to eat in one of my parents favorite restaurants and i was introduced to the waitress, when i said hello and extended my hand, she said "oh no in the south every one hugs", and the waitress hugged me. next morning we went out to breakfast and i was introduced to yet another waitress.................... awkward, didn't know if i was to hug her too.
my family piled into an already crowded elevator and my mom began introducing herself and her two daughters to everyone in the elevator.. the elevator people all yelled "goodbye joan!" as we got off on our floor.
later that day, my mom drove me around her town in her red golf cart, gunning it down the hills, close to the edges, then stopped, she said "oh dear i have no idea where we are sugar."
i also got to see the closet my mom goes in when there is a hurricane warning. she sits in there with a towel wrapped around her head, throat losengers , the cat, her pills and a checkbook.
this is where my art comes from.
by the way, humpty is back on the wall again.

really this title needs to be in french- l' ame d' e`le`phant. oh dear, it's a little butchered because i have no idea how to put those french marks in. But, it is very important for a deep unknown reason, this painting is french. from now on, my paintings will come with a sweet little back story revealing a bit more of the spirit intended.
i do love this (french)elephant and it's meaning. i can't tell you everything now. i want to keep it's mystery.

this is a now a new fresh small oak table...the image is wood burned and the paint is more absorbed in, rather than painted. i was gifted some pieces of furnishings to recycle. you can see it at ITHACAmade. more is in the works. what i love about this table is i solved a problem....the deep gap of two halves of the table now are a benefit to the design. what ever it is you are looking for- if you put it on the cat table, you will always find it. that is the best selling point, and of course the amazing price.

this is another piece of cardboard for gallery night , this friday!. there will also be a bunch of flying remnants. this particular piece is about two feet square , so it's like a tray and all of my cardboard art fits within for easy transport. it can hang on the wall and you may also use it as a shelf, for a few light tidbits. i did try making a lifesize cardboard character to sit at the desk, but had a few technical difficulties. like what? well it just looked like a piece of cardboard that folds, propped up. it really bothered me so i had to recycle her. but i have ideas.............

this photo was sent to me by shannon, the new owner of the cardboard man flying above her bed. originally the cardboard man was just a window display, now he has a new life as "ART" ! below is a photo of him in his former life. i feel like the cardboard man is now "real", like in the velveteen man (rabbit). funny how art can make you feel real, present and transformed.

it is tuesday. i am at my shop on tuesdays - ithacamade.com so this is the place to find my work, and sometimes me... it's a long day so i suggest you get a cup of coffee at gimme and come visit. i like mine with cream, but not too light. i will be filling the place up within the next couple of weeks with some fun furnishings. it helps to feel like spring if you are out walking carrying a cup of coffee and try not to over dress, although everyone i see is zipped up right to the neck. i did have two wonderful customers in today that spent a long time looking at everything....they said "it's hard to leave" (all the art).

this is a possible cd cover idea for a 7o's rock group called the glass prism. the big hit that they had was called "the raven" by poe. they are about to release a new album with new version of the song. i first made a quick sketch, now this is a painting version.
i have titled the post februaury, because it is always my most creative month. i feel like a groundhog by now so this is the way for me to see my own shadow......deep.

my show comes down the 24th of dec.so here is a portion of a large panel. this owl actually sits atop one of two mountains.h.moleski took photos of the show and they are edited in a way that adds yet another layer and focus to the story. A poster of this image is in the works, should be available next week. the words that go with this image is "wishes come true".

i have a new show coming up at the Community Arts Partnership located in Center Ithaca - opens this coming Friday- Dec. 3rd 5-8 pm and runs through December. This show is about a deep knowing. I know what it means for me, but what will it mean to the viewer. a visual story i was compelled to tell on large panels with connecting poetic lines. what i hope is that you will feel, shift, like in a lyric or music in a song.

cats, i can't stop making them lately. this is a piece of furniture ( a bar). it lives at ithacamade-a new cool shop located in the old bishops building on west state st .i also made cats suspended in mid-air, and as a totem and a sculpture. this is a good way to have more than one cat.

this is a preview of a surprise raven painting i am posting to make sure the colors and frame, will do. they had seen a similar painting years ago and still remembered it. each one of the large paintings i have done are one of a kind and have a very unique frame. i also do not make many, they are very special to me. this raven is painted a little wispy to give it a bit more spirit and age. if the owners have more of a color request to go with the room it will hang, i can still do that. please send me an email with what you think or leave a comment on my blog. i think they have carried this painting in their minds eye for about three years. they saw me in buffalo at allentown festival.

so if you would rather, instead of a framed piece, i can cut out a big half circle piece of wood and paint it in similar colors or with a santa fe adobe brown orange background. i vaguely remember it was to be in a screen porch. and how protected should it be against elements.

Got the key and went to look at the new studio gallery-
120 w.state st. it's located above state of the art gallery. just a flight up or two. tomorrow the raven desk will return out of storage. that is extra exciting to me. i will probably be there fairly often, you will see a cool sculpture outside when i am there. then you can come on upstairs and visit the studio. every gallery night i will have something new going on, i have lots of ideas. my plan is to create this haven, where i will finally make and produce all the things on my wish list .first project is this very special mega painting i am making for a beautiful couple in a beautiful home with mile high ceilings.

i am in the house, teetering. some days i amaze myself when i actually perk-up.finding creative sparks through the gray. thank goodness for show business. i have two brand new shows-one is at fine line bistro on state st, the other is at korova bar on the commons. the piece above is at korova. this show is on paper, they are real posters. interesting how i can work even faster on paper and there is this very cool energy that comes from just going for it. they are somewhat mixed media, with my images cut out kind of like wall paper. i do not like those posters that hang in the workplace- so these are my attempts at inspirational works slightly askew. at korova the , tim who takes care of the shows custom painted the walls to compliment my art. now that is awesome beyond the call of duty. he said my new show is really urban, i agree.

this is one of ten pieces at my new show at fine line bistro. now i am creating ten more pieces for my show at korova by march first. i really have to keep the creative juice flowing. for the korova show i am working on paper and they will be more of a poster. not sure yet exactly, but i am experimenting with a new fast idea. economical in all regards.

but first lets talk about trust. is it easier to fear than trust? which takes less energy? i consciously choose trust. i have to remind myself of that. very zen.

this is somebody's table. i am not sure who, but it was inspired by a place, two lovely people and beautifully painted walls. the lines are burned in. some pieces just need to be etched or burned . when you rub your hand over top you can feel the line. it also has a slide out tray, i put the image on one side because i liked it and the idea of looking up hill and so you could put a something on the other side, like flowers or your favorite book...

this is not the best shot of the Holiday Spirit store window, a work in progress. it's just the backdrop. i love cardboard. natasha keller is working on the two side windows. she might be really liking cardboard now too. it is so great working with artists at the fly by night store we are creating. another artist susan rollings just came up with this brilliant way to get us the best cardboard ever. i can not reveal our source just yet. werner sun is going to help us with the pop- ups and technical wow factors. later, we are then going to put on a puppet show, based on a fairy tale written by rob costello. no, we have NO idea what we are doing, but it will be fun. we open THIS friday gallery night!

here are my finished recycled sculptures. these are made from things that would have gone to the dump. the pieces begged me to save them from doom, and now look at them! silly i know, but it does make me smile when i pull into the driveway and see them.you can see them at the garden art show at the plantsman nursery. art buddy and friend -werner sun will also have his mobiles.

this is the finished puzzle table . the table opens where the two birds meet. hard to tell in this photo but the lines are burned into the wood. it gives an etching kind of feel. it is a tad more pastel than i usually paint , but it felt

right. the home it will be in, is a work of art, and houses many works of art, and i was granted free reign to create. it is done in my symbolic map style, which i can not seem to move from. but i wanted to paint a place where love meets again and again.

these are blocks of wood. i kept changing around the structure. dont know if i will keep them this way. it becomes a sculpture. the wires in the head i always find them on the road. the pieces are leftover from a remodel. my art tunnel or my art garage , not sure what i will call it. but it will be good when you walk in. sturdy walls, a new door, a little world. i even found there is a window. so when its done , this will be funny, i will have an opening. excellent idea. oh so about the blocks, i am going to try to make sculptures with all the leftover teardown construction and wood. i do not want to put it in the dump. so i will let you know how it goes.............

this day last year was the last day of the gallery spirit and kitsch. i didn't remember what day it was. a dear customer ( now friend) emailed me to tell me he had the day on his calendar. it was a beautiful letter he sent. it created a different way in which i would move through july 17th. he said it was like being spiritual, but not having to go to a church. i am just out in the world making art. so are my other spirit and kitsch artists.it all worked out perfectly..... thats me and "cloudbuster" going over the details before i rode off on that horse, have the apron on because i would also be selling hotdogs and popcorn. and yes cloudbuster usually wears a suit but for once he just wore his derby.

it's something that just started happening by a few wisps of color, i saw/thought this image. i just couldn't resist making it. i have this NO series of work , anyway. and i wasn't thinking of that at the time... this image just came forth.

oh my goodness, this piece is made of metal and over 6 feet tall. not sure of exact dimensions. the client that purchased the piece from the wonderland show sent me this image. it also hangs on the wall but she decided to take it down and let it rest, awaiting to greet wedding guests. i just love that she did this and sent me the photo. right now it is in bed in a guest room. she did not send that photo .
anyway i feel i can rest a bit now too. we had a really good turnout for the map show. it made people happy, there was that energy.....it was all quite surprising. lots of spirit and kitsch fans and members!! teaming with ben and werner is inspiring. so if you check out thecolortree.net you can see some photos of the upstairs gallery show. although it is best to see it in person, as it is with all things, yes?

so here i am resting.or parts of me. that huge urge to create large is resting, but will awaken easily. meanwhile today i need to deliver two emergency ravens. two different people saw me at my farmers market booth on sunday and both needed one for a gift for their husbands. so today i will put one in each of their mailboxes.

the map show opens next friday, 5-8 pm, it's gallery night! the show is at the UPSTAIRS gallery in Dewitt Mall. call us if you need a map to get there. The show is going to be great because i have seen some of what my friends ben marlan and werner sun are working on. this show will also have some really cool accessible priced pieces as well. for instance you will be able to purchase this print right here, we are also making some stenciled signs that you will not be able to resist to accompany you in your life.

this is one of my favorite pieces from the "curiousity changed her "show. i think at the moment they are all quite dear to me. like pages from within. the space they hang in, is intimate. this is the moment when alice knows shes different.

the story i tell is of longing, sadness and beauty. the show will be up until nov. and i will be adding new pieces.

this is monkey, i originally wanted a monkey, but when i read about the upkeep, i got a cat named monkey instead. yes she is as she looks. a "pip". ah another great old word. she spends alot of her time on my back, around my neck and ninja attacks when i least expect it. why just yesterday i was trying to talk on the phone and she kept trying to get the phone away from me.this is her awaiting an attack, but the flash of the camera lights her position. shes tucked atop my computer, at night its dark in that pocket. as i stood up to reach for something in the shelf above her, i was given a good furry paw swipe, as you can see in her expression. she has shown up in a few of my paintings, and i am tempted to put a stripe down my nose like hers. i am a member of her tribe.

wonder still how i will pull this off, so far it seems still a mystery. but at last here is your invite. the opening will be a mad hatter tea party. so dress-up is welcome.

afraid to say i decided not to wear the "classic" wonderland outfit, but i will wear something a little more "spirited". liz tilley is making me a custom apron. so i really think it will be fun, do try to stop by and you have until november to see it!!! i will be updating and changing it as the months go by.

a very special customer that now lives in philly, requested a sighting of this painting. it's not finished. so i thought i would post a preview. even i have no idea what i will do to it next.

for now, i will just move on to the next panel, entitled" alice was fearless." i hope, as i slowly unleash them in a sketchy form, somehow i will be possessed to give them what they need. i guess its like gardening, but i am terrible at it. so that"s probably not a good analogy. i have only a couple of weeks left to whirl myself in this story. i guess i too, will trust the universe.

hung out with artists this weekend. now that is pretty "mad." when you are with them, you notice you start to feel sane again. how perfect to walk down an alleyway and run into an artist that you can later meet for drinks. even though its served in a paper cup. i have been feeling "mad" lately , there is no such thing as normal. i am sure of it. when have i ever felt normal? is that a place we want to go? .a peek of my cheshire cat in the trip of wonder............no, i wouldn't pet that cat either.

hung my show at The Fine Line Bistro. it will be up until may 12th. i got to hang the show with one of the owners, danny, it was great be there. and well the paintings do look good in that space. very intimate. danny strongly suggests i come in the eve when the lights are low and theres that orange glow. the image shown is one of the paintings i had kept at home for myself but now its at the bistro. i painted it and loved the humor in it. didn't think of this while making it but afterward i remembered i am a pisces. so this sums up everything. don't worry i am finally riding in the right direction.

curiousity

this is my initial painting ( not done ) for the alice show- entitled" Curiousity changed her", a trip to wonderland. this is only half of her. she is ten feet tall. wait till you see her dress, why of course theres a raven on it. we are finally going somewhere. (me and alice) that is, i also finished to a sketch point one large painting, panel entitled " trusting the universe". now i will just keep cranking them all out to see how the story unfolds, then i will finish them. i guess in a way i have entered wonderland myself, it's rather unknown. but alice was fearless in the story. i plan on surrounding myself in the six foot panels, hopefully ten and see how it feels. thats what its all about. how do you feel? not how are you doing. but how do you feel. stay tuned for the cheshire cat and pillar.

i had my cards read and also my palms. i have been stuck. she was able to read my invisible map . her words set me free. i knew they were true. amazing. this is a portion of a sketch of a series of soul ish maps i am making with mr. sun werner and sir ben. the sketch which i did before the reading, came true. i was told i will also be coming into money, lots of money over time. boy will that lift your spirits. the next day i received three piles of cash (about 550.oo). so this is a wonderful start and i am ready to finally delve into my next projects, whole hearted. had to sew up some wounds. i have never had the courage to have my cards read but i knew this woman could read me. probably because i could read her. and no i didn't go to that place on meadow st. it's like you are walking around with no skin and then this person can see that. it shifts everything for you.

this is a sketch of my dad drawn by my daughter sequoyah. yesterday was my dad's birthday. kids call him"pop". i don't think a photo could capture him the way she did. we sent this to him as his card. my dad's name is albert. he was named after einstein. true story. he is indeed very much like einstein. sometimes those two grey long side tufts of hair with a good gust of wind is when you can clearly see the resemblance. my dad can fix everything. he was a medic in the korean war and he still also has this amazing medical intuition where he has saved many people. i often wonder if he would be different if he wasn't named after einstein. let me also say that my dad helps me in my art . he creates some of my ideas i send him as a sketch into wood. oh don't know if you can tell in the drawing but my dad is very proud of being german. he even listens to ompah music on long trips. my dad always told me if i need anything give a whistle. he lives in georgia, i live in upstate new york. i am still whistling.

i ask for grace several times a day. my mind gets flooded and taunted with memory. everything and nothing is familiar. all i know is that i must keep open, positive. creating what i want. next. i need to paint, but i have stopped for a while now. just keep making sketches. have to make my wonderland, but i am not sure of the terrain. mapping it out. putting myself in the new. heart pulls back. just step outside and love the day, should that be so easy. i sit outside the box.

a quick little sketch of alice. this is going to be so much fun. alice in wonderland is all about change, and the words i am pulling out are fantastic. and who should not seek advice from a catepillar smoking a hookah. i spent the afternoon filling my newsprint notepad full with ideas. and words. when you walk into the room it will be through a giant keyhole. now it will have to have hinges so all can enter. i have it worked out in my mind. and on paper. test is in the construction. i adore cardboard. i think alice lives in a paperbag. paper or plastic? wonderland is in the bag. oh no, there i go. curious and curiouser............

i just read in one of my books that once you make a change, then it's like you can't stop. could this be true? what does werner think. this is a portion of a long paneled painting titled change. i have been riding that wave. you really have to

break open. it's also cool to see all the changes other people made, since i made a change. i get dizzy if i think too much about it.

so, i am creating a big new show to hang in the fineline bistro on state street, right after saint pats day.word on the streets say it's the hottest and best restaurant. after that it's the alice in wonderland show. i have always wanted to do that. but no, i don't think i will wear that dress and socks she wears. is it pink?

i made this image maybe two years ago, it's one of my favorites. that's good because i find myself needing courage, alot. i guess one should be inspired by their own work. for me this is also my crest, as is the raven, it hangs on the door that leads to my lair (awesome word). the words that go with it are: to face things and stand up right in front, like the wind from a storm, sometimes just to feel and remember. to step forth and hear your spirit. problem is, not everyone hears or sees your spirit as you do, as you must do. i describe following your spirit as living with question and living by the moon, finding delight in change because nothing ever remains the same. and no, it's not easy.

all you need is one word, roll it around in your head, light is a good word. especially in winter, in ithaca. so here's a clouded wispy painting, a light spirit. it will be in the upcoming "hearty souls" show at the kitschen sink. i particularly like how you can view it as the sun carrying the person or the person carrying the sun. i mean really, not just anyone can live in ithaca. thank goodness for imagination. january is the time to hold close your dreams and get ready to make them fly, despite all forecasts.

now there's a word thick with so many, many meanings. but after creating so much work for the holidays, i have had time to just be home. i do work from my home so i am home alot, so what am i talking about ? proping myself up in bed with lots of pillows, coffee and a newsprint note pad just doodling. decided to follow bear and pretend i am hibernating. got a good bottle of organic wine, and remembering how much i love winter? no, but i should because i do live in ithaca, a very cold planet.

i am working on pieces for the upcoming show at the kitschen sink and shown is my newest piece, entitled well, HOME. the fun part about this piece is that i actually live on a cliff. so i wish evryone a moment of home, whatever that means to you, and hopefully you are surrounded by some type of the arts. it can make you feel magical and lucky.

I thought artist was a good title, because that's what i am doing, now. alot. I have been so busy haven't had time to keep up on my blog. (thanks rob)
If you can, there's still time to catch a show with me and Werner Sun, an unexpected collaboration called" uplifted" at the Thou-Art gallery in groton. a wonderful venue to visit. Also there's about a week left to catch a show at the Manndible Cafe at Cornell with Ben Marlan.

the image shown is a preview for a show i will be in at the Tompkins County Library entitled "seeing in the dark", opening on Jan. 23rd. You can't go wrong with that title, no matter what you do , it will work. We are constantly seeing in the dark, especially when making art. I also will be in a show at The Kitschen Sink called "hearty Souls" , oh no the opening is almost the same date, it's the 24th.

well not really , but i did seem to disappear in a way... i no longer have the spirit and kitsch art garage on elmira road. phew, i am reinventing. meanwhile i can be found at the farmers market on sundays, (possible saturdays in nov.) and in the holiday store on the commons for the xmas season( in the old night and day store). you can still find my art and other spirit and kitsch members at the smart monkey , the kitschen sink (formerly spirit and kitsch) and at the seahag . we are currently rebuilding our web site- spiritandkitsch.com so you will be able to find some great art there too.

i just recently placed a very cool painted record that is entitled "bye bye blackbird" on our web site, please check it out more frequently as we slowly rebuild.

The Book

this is my first sketch for the painting i am working on. Inspired by a book. the words sent me into this peaceful void, or portal. my best description is what you feel like when you regain consciousness after fainting. i get such cravings for the right words, to help me find know what i am looking for. i always savor my initial little drawings, this one still has the notebook lines behind it. okay so when i'm finished i will reveal the painting. maybe the name of the book too.

Ahh, another old word, here's my latest sculpture "cupboard "for the upcoming june show at the gallery (opening fri. june 6th). There will also be some very cool rugs from an artist in new mexico and i will make a few of my own. I will be joined by commrades Janet Locke and Mary Reynolds.

"In looking for wisdom" yes really the answers are right deep inside you. But i think you need to get there by some unknown back doors, hidden entryways, and surprise. The other problem is you can be so absorbed in looking and asking why, that you don't see. There is no answer, it's awareness.

I love words with layers of meanings. You can read the word however you wish. "Overcome "is wrought with emotional energy, and a sense of relief. Like a great wave. That's what this painting is titled. Most of the time i am overcome in some shape or form. It's easiest if you have wings.
